It's 6 am and I'm crossing over the Andes Mountains in Ecuador on a rickety bus smelling of diesel fuel and chickens. As I look over the craggy slope beside me, the skeletons of buses past lie rusting away. The grass is green on the mountain side and there's fog in the distant valleys.
